about

Zhongshan is a prefecture-level city in the southern province of Guangdong, China. Named after Dr. Sun Yat-sen, who is known as Sun Zhongshan in Mandarin and widely considered the father of modern China, the city has a profound historical significance. Geographically, Zhongshan is situated in the Pearl River Delta region, and is bordered by the city of Guangzhou on the north, Shenzhen and Hong Kong to the east, and Macau and Zhuhai to the south. The city enjoys a subtropical marine climate with plenty of rain, moderate temperatures year-round, and sufficient sunlight which fosters lush vegetation and rich agricultural products. The Xi River (West River) flows through Zhongshan and contributes to its vital role within the Pearl River Delta's network of waterways, which significantly impacts the city's development and trading activities, historically and currently. The Qijiang or Tanjiang river is also an important waterway passing through the city. Zhongshan covers an area of about 1,800 square kilometers and is divided into several districts, towns, and subdistricts. It is known for its 'village in the city' urban model, where urbanization and community lifestyle coexist. Historically, Zhongshan has been a land of emigration, with many of its natives establishing themselves in various parts of the world. This has led to a unique cultural impact whereby overseas Chinese communities regularly interact with their place of origin, contributing to the local economy and keeping cultural ties alive. Culturally, Zhongshan is a blend of traditional Cantonese culture with influences from the numerous overseas Chinese. This blend is evident in local customs, cuisine, dialects, and festivities. The city is also the birthplace of several notable historical figures including the afore-mentioned Sun Yat-sen. With a population that surpasses 3 million inhabitants, Zhongshan has an ethnic composition that is predominantly Han Chinese, with various dialect groups including the Cantonese. The city's economic landscape is diverse, with strengths in manufacturing, especially in lighting, electronics, machinery, and equipment. In recent years, the city has been focusing on developing its service sector along with technological innovation and green industries, advancing the city's modernization and sustainable development goals. Tourism in Zhongshan includes attractions such as the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, Zimaling Park, and various traditional villages that offer a glimpse into the region's history and architecture. The city's cultural events, such as the Dragon Boat Festival and the Chinese New Year celebrations, draw both domestic and international tourists. In sum, Zhongshan is a dynamic city that balances rapid economic growth and urban development with preserving its cultural heritage and tight-knit community ethos, standing as a unique urban entity in the vibrant Pearl River Delta economic zone.
